Keynote – Remembering the Mission: Developing Mobile Experiences at the National Gallery, London, United Kingdom

Since introducing an audio guide for the permanent collection in 1995, the National Gallery, United Kingdom, has worked with a range of different mobile experiences including podcasts, iPhone applications, and themed audio tours. Drawing on this experience, this key-note will explore how an institution approach developing mobile experiences that both inform and engage museum audiences while meeting key organizational objectives.

The explosion of tablet-based devices is dramatically changing the mobile landscape. Tablets offer attractive features for museums: large, high resolution screens to display images and facilitate collaboration; touch interfaces for ease of use; and computing power and long battery life to run powerful apps. This session will explore three very different use cases for tablets and explore what this new type of device offers to different museum audiences.

Through analysis of mobile projects developed, launched, and maintained by three very different cultural institutions, this session will explore how best to plan and design a mobile experience that engages with children and teens on their developmental terms.

As web traffic from mobile devices increases, the creation of a mobile-friendly web site is a pressing objective of most institutions. Determining how to start in this process can however be challenging. Through an exploration of the how the National Air & Space Museum and the National Gallery of Canada developed their first mobile web sites, this session will identify the key decisions and design guidelines that should inform the planning and development of an institution’s mobile web site.
